Fighting the Blackout
The San Diego Gas and Electric supplier offers now to install a remote controlled switch that would enable them to turn off residential A/C units in the summer heat to balance the overall electric power usage. That would eventually help to avoid the dreaded Rolling Blackout, where they just cut the power off for everyone since the grid can't take the load. The program is voluntarily, and it gives a credit for the electric bill. Sounds good to me, since we don't use the A/C anyway. Below is a graph from a similar industrial program from PG&E.
