I just learned from The Week that Phillip Jose Farmer passed away on February 25 this year (1918-2009). I think I read a ton of his books. He is most famous for many very thick multi-book series. Most notably the "Riverworld" about a world dominated by an endless river where all people ever lived would be reborn. Or "The Other Log of Phileas Fogg", which is based on the assumption that Fhileas Fogg was an alien. Or "Dayworld", where people live in stasis for 6 days a week to cope with overpopulation. PJF was always thinking big.
